Telescopic vs Sharkfin vs Feather Flags: Which Branded Flag Works Best?

Six flag styles, one decision: which suits your event, brand and wind conditions? Here is the comparison from a manufacturer who makes all six.

Published 25 June 2026

We make six different styles of portable branded flags: telescopic, sharkfin, feather, lantern, country flags and flag fountains. New customers often ask which one is “best” – the answer depends on what you are trying to achieve. Here is the full comparison.

Telescopic Flags – the versatile workhorse

Telescopic flags use a multi-section interlocking pole that extends to your chosen height (2m, 3m or 4m). They use a curved pole + arched fabric configuration.

Strengths:

  • Adjustable height – useful when venues have height restrictions
  • Single-side or double-side print
  • Pack down small (interlocking pole + flag in one bag)
  • Strong in moderate wind (15-25km/h sustained)

Weaknesses:

  • More setup time (assembling pole sections)
  • Multi-section poles have more failure points than single-piece

Best for: Events where the flag needs adjustable height, indoor expos with low ceilings, and customers who travel with flags weekly.

Price band: From R595 ex vat (2m single sided) to R1 595 ex vat plus (3m double sided).

Sharkfin Flags – the wind champion

Sharkfin flags have a curved leading edge that catches wind smoothly, lowering resistance. The shape gives it the name.

Strengths:

  • Better in strong wind than other flag styles (handles 40km/h+ gusts)
  • Visible from all angles thanks to the curved edge
  • Single-piece pole = fewer failure points
  • Strong vertical visibility – the high point is at the top of the fin

Weaknesses:

  • Fixed shape (cannot adjust orientation like a flag fountain)
  • Larger footprint when poles include outriggers

Best for: Coastal venues, outdoor expos with unpredictable wind, and locations where the flag needs to stay up all day without supervision.

Price band: From R595 ex vat (2m single sided) upwards.

Feather Flags – the maximum brand surface

Feather flags (sometimes called teardrop or flagpole flags) use a straight pole with the brand fabric tapered to a point at the top, creating a teardrop or feather shape.

Strengths:

  • Largest visible brand surface of any flag style
  • Tall and skinny – fits in tight footprints (parking lots, narrow stall corners)
  • Looks elegant on permanent installations (corporate forecourts, dealerships)
  • Easy to set up – pole, base, fabric over the pole, done

Weaknesses:

  • Less wind-tolerant than sharkfin in extreme gusts (the wide fabric catches wind)
  • Smaller pole base options need weighting in any breeze

Best for: Brand activations where impact matters most, corporate building forecourts, and any setup where maximum brand exposure beats minor wind concerns.

Price band: From R595 ex vat.

Lantern Banners – the inflatable showstopper

Lantern banners use an inflatable lantern shape on a vertical pole, creating a 360-degree branded sphere or oval visible from any direction.

Strengths:

  • Visible from every angle (no “back” to a lantern)
  • Higher up than ground-level flags – stands above crowds
  • Eye-catching and unusual – stands out from a row of standard flags
  • Internal LED lighting option for after-dark visibility

Weaknesses:

  • Inflation setup adds 2-3 minutes
  • Wind-restricted (sustained 20km/h+ requires take-down)
  • Higher unit cost than feather/sharkfin flags

Best for: Premium events where you want to stand out from the crowd, evening events (with internal LED), and brand awareness campaigns where memorability matters more than reach.

Price band: From R595 ex vat.

Country Flags – the lightweight crowd-handout

Country flags (also called hand-flags) are smaller printed flags on light wooden or plastic poles, intended to be carried by crowd members or planted in soft ground.

Strengths:

  • Cheapest per-unit of any flag style
  • Hand-out at events for crowd engagement
  • Easy to brand
  • Small profile = great for tight crowd corridors

Weaknesses:

  • Indoor or low-wind outdoor use only
  • Short service life (1-2 events per flag in practice)
  • Limited size = limited brand impact at distance

Best for: Sports events (wave-along supporter flags), kids’ activations, and any event where you want crowd participation rather than tall billboard signage.

Price band: From R495 ex vat for sets.

Flag Fountains – the cluster

Flag fountains are four or more branded flags arranged in a circle on a single base, creating a fan or “fountain” shape.

Strengths:

  • Maximum branding in minimum footprint
  • Looks dramatic – the multiple-flag cluster reads as one big brand mark
  • All flag faces visible from any angle
  • Single base = single setup, multiple flags

Weaknesses:

  • Heavier base required
  • Less wind-tolerant than single flags (multiple flags catching wind on one base)
  • Higher unit cost than single feather flags

Best for: Brand activations with single-spot maximum impact (e.g., the centre of an exhibition hall, the corner of a parking lot entrance), and customers who want one item to do the work of four flags.

Price band: From R3 595 ex vat for full cluster.

How many flags do you actually need?

For most activations, two flags per gazebo is the sweet spot – one at each front corner. Four flags (one at each corner) creates a “flag fence” effect that doubles brand visibility from a distance.

If you are doing a single tall feature flag (e.g., at a parking lot entrance), one 3m or 4m flag does the job. If you are trying to make a 3m x 3m gazebo look like a 6m installation, four 3m flags around the perimeter is the trick.

Combo deals include flags

Several of our Combo Deals & Specials bundle flags into the kit. The cheaper Classic kits include 2m telescopic or sharkfin flags; the Deluxe kits step up to 3m flags. If you are buying a gazebo and need flags too, the combo route is 10-20% cheaper than à la carte.
